Guest Post: The Road to Recovery

Today, as I am off busily writing my own guest post, I have a guest post for you guys from Joe. Joe is also an injured athlete, so this post couldn’t have been more timely! Enjoy :)

While preparing myself for a summer full of various endurance races, including a half marathon, obstacle course race and three triathlons, my training was brought to a screeching halt because of a running related overuse injury. Instead of swimming, biking or running, I am spending my time at the physical therapist and in the yoga studio.

For anyone who has been forced to stop running or training because of an injury knows what kind of emotional rollercoaster this can be.  It takes a ton of determination and discipline to exercise on a regular basis.  More challenging still is the decision to enter a race, make travel arrangements and create a training schedule to prepare yourself for physical and mental rigors of the race.  While the thought of running a mile may have been overwhelming at the start of the journey to race day, the inability to train can be crushing.

With that in mind, try following these steps to get your mind and body in check on the road to recovery:

Stay Positive:  I am here to here to tell you, and remind myself, that an injury is not the end of the world.  Remember that the situation you find yourself in is temporary.  Focus on what you can change, not on those things which are out of your control.

Get Mentally Tough: Although an injury can keep you from training in the physical sense, it allows you the time to focus on mental, emotional and spiritual healing that will benefit you in all facets of life. (Amen to that one!)

RICE: Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation: For overuse injuries or muscle soreness use the ice pack for 20 minutes, every 2 to 3 hours. In between icing, apply the compression bandage, brace, or apparel to the desired area.  Icing and compression techniques can also be applied to prevent injuries and reduce soreness.

Stay Active: Scheduling a low-intensity routine on an off day will assist with muscle recovery.   Plan a low impact workout that features exercises and activities that add variety to the typical training program.  Yoga, swimming, cycling, stretching, foam rolling, and core exercise fit well into an active rest protocol.

Take Away: Keep in mind that everything you are feeling is normal.  Every athlete or exerciser has, at one point in time, had to deal with an injury.  Embrace the challenge you have been confronted with, don’t let the negativity creep in and prepare to return to action as a better version of yourself.

Thanks Joe for all the tips :)

the big return…

…but not to running. don’t get your hopes up on that one yet.

but just in case you were wondering if I ever did run (I know I wonder sometimes) here is a picture proving that not only did I run, but I was quite happy doing so.

I digress…

this morning I did something that I haven’t done in over 10 years. (side note: the fact that I can utter the phrase “over 10 years” disturbs me… is that just me? I said “it’s been over 20 years” about something to sean yesterday and almost had a heart attack). whoops I digress yet again…

I swam.

beer

and I don’t mean swimming in the “let me lay out by the river or on the lake or by the pool with a cold beverage in my hand and a good gossip magazine so that I can soak up some sun” kind of way, I mean the “I jumped in a pool and swam laps this morning” kind of way.

I’ll be honest – I was terrified. I used to swim competitively, and going back to something with zero baseline endurance when I used to be so good at it was absolutely one of the scariest things I’ve done in a while. do you like how I just mentioned that I was so good at it? in reality I was a fairly decent swimmer, but not a great one ;-)

but I did it and I had a lot of fun doing so. sure I got tired immediately and I had to take much longer breaks in between sets than I anticipated, but I realized how much I miss gliding through water so effortlessly.

I was so excited about swimming laps that I even called my dad on the way to work to tell him about it. not that he answered so he still has no idea. which brings me to another point: I’ve realized that recently my parents are turning into teenagers and either screening my phone calls or just flat-out ignoring them and not returning them. I’m not really sure what that’s about. I’ve brought it up to them several times and they just laugh and tell me I’m being ridiculous but I’m noticing a very distinct trend… I’m not sure if this is payback for all the times I screened their phone calls or what the deal is but…. MOM! DAD! if you are reading this then one of you needs to call me back IMMEDIATELY! I called HOURS ago!

wow. random tangent.

anyways, I’ll call that a cardio win! and I’ll be honest, I’ve needed some positive breakthroughs with cardio in my life, especially after my failed spin attempt. but that is another story for another day.

do you swim?? have any good swim routines i can use??

darts and cats

I was lucky enough to get a fancy new nikon for christmas and sean and I pretty much obsessively take pictures with it. however those pictures rarely go anywhere other than the memory card and each of our laptops. I’m going to try and get some of the pictures edited and up on the blog.

::::moving on::::

with the weather in a giant upswing lately (ok, who am i kidding? we had no real winter so we just kind of seamlessly shifted from fall to spring) and the days finally getting longer, sean and I have been spending quite a bit of time outside. one of our favorite pastimes is hanging out on our back deck playing darts and drinking our favorite beers. we are pretty competitive when it comes to playing cricket .

side note: a couple years ago sean and i met a few friends up at a bar and randomly entered a dart competition. your partners were randomly picked from the group of people who signed up and i got paired with some random guy. we ended up taking second place overall at the end of the night. wasn’t that a fun story!?

dart

bam. bullseye. guess whose dart that was? I’ll give you a hint. only sean and I were playing and it wasn’t his.

leo

the cats go crazy when we’re outside. they paw at the windows and meow like crazy in hopes that we’ll either come back inside or let them out. either works, so long as they are allowed to be with us. we’re pretty rude cat owners and we opened up the windows just enough that the cats could fit their little heads through, but not their bodies. they spent a loooong time trying to figure out how to squeeze through such a small space. we spent an equally loooong time laughing at how they could only fit their little heads through.

cats

we did finally open up the window far enough to let them crawl out and hang out in the backyard. they wasted no time. though I will say letting them outside was a massive mistake because they spent the remainder of the day and night sitting at the back door meowing to get out. you’d think they were deprived or something. though this past weekend when we let them outside sean was raking the backyard and louie (brown cat) was not having it. every time sean raked he would dart back inside and then peer out the open door. our usually fearless little furry friend is afraid of a rake.

if I felt like editing anymore photos I would share a lot more because we took a ton of artsy pictures (since we are so gifted with the camera, naturally), but honestly editing is time consuming and my computer is slow. so those three random favorites are the only ones making the cut for now.

and to emphasize how much effort I put into my appearance when I’m home and not expecting to hang out with anyone other than sean, leo and louie, I’ll leave you with this gem of me playing with an apparently nonexistent cat.

me

I know, its hard to compete with such raw, natural beauty.

do you play darts? if so, wanna play?!

Guest Post: Positive Change–Getting Fit

Today I have a guest post from Chris, who just recently went through a drastic life transformation. He’s sharing his story of how he finally got fit once and for all. Enjoy Smile

On the 20thof March, 2011, I found myself driving to a friend’s house, not far from where I used to live; a journey I’d made countless times before.

Why was this time different?

I’ll tell you: because I was, for all intents and purposes, homeless.

That day the relationship that I’d given four of my 23 years fell apart, leaving me with nowhere to live.

I slept in a friend’s spare room for a week, and in that time, I stepped back and took a good, hard look at my life… I was overweight (and quite considerably so), I was a far heavier smoker than I cared to admit (I had quit some years previous, which had turned into only smoking with a drink, which turned into only smoking with friends, which turned into only smoking outside of work, and was dangerously close to becoming “smoking” again), I suffered from awful insomnia, and my confidence in myself was at absolutely rock bottom.

I thought, there’s nowhere to go but up.

Well, that’s not entirely true: What actually happened was I spent a few days crying, eating grapes and smoking non-stop – and if you can think of a better way to get over a nasty breakup, then please let me know in the comments – but after that, I decided it was time to make a positive change.

The first thing I did was get fit – I was morbidly obese, so it was long overdue.

chris

I started by changing my diet. Gone were entire tubes of Pringles, takeaways, fried food and sweets, and in their place came a simple but effective diet that made sure I got my fill of lean meat, fruits and veggies, and plenty of fiber and calcium to help my body crunch through it. Breakfast used to consist of some kind of cooked meat in a bun, slathered in ketchup – I replaced that with a cornucopia of fruit, and lunch became a jacket potato with salad instead of pastries, crisps and chocolate. Evening meals became grilled chicken and salad, or tomato curries, or Quorn Bolognese – all cooked from absolute scratch; gone were the pre-prepared meals and jars of sauce, with their preservatives and salt.

I coupled this diet change with some serious exercise: I hadn’t done any proper exercise for a very long time, and clambering on the exercise bike that was in the apartment I was living in at the time took a huge amount of convincing myself to do – but I decided I was going to do 90 minutes a week, and I stuck to that doggedly.

I won’t lie, the first few times I did this I struggled to walk the few steps to the shower afterwards, but by the second week things were starting to get easier – I actually found that before too long I was – gasp – enjoying myself. I would look forward to popping a pair of headphones in, turning the music up loud and powering through a session on the bike, and the sweat and the pain was more than made up for by the endorphin kick I got afterwards.

So, how did this change in lifestyle affect my weight?

Quite significantly, is the answer. In my first week I lost 5lbs, and over the next 26 weeks on average I lost around 3.5lbs a week, including one crazy week in which I dropped 7.5lbs!

chris2

Seeing these drops really helped to motivate me, and in time I moved from my exercise bike to an actual outdoors bike, as well as quitting smoking (which I achieved back in September, and have kept up with since then – looks like I’ve beaten it for good this time!) and finally getting my sleep and body clock in order.

Unfortunately, I don’t have any great tips or advice, I really don’t: All I can tell you is that if you really want to achieve something, you’ll put the work in. I admit that my diet probably did take over my life a little bit at one point, but I needed the focus and the commitment to keep pushing, to turn down the sweets, the cake and the chocolate, and the sheer will to drag myself back onto that exercise bike, regardless of how little I wanted to.

So, here I am, just over a year later: Healthier, happier, more successful and fuller of life than ever. I lost 101lbs in six months altogether and it absolutely changed my life, and my advice to anybody out there who wants to get out there and drop those excess pounds that you feel are holding you back is this: Do it now– never let yourself sink as low as I did before you start picking yourself back up.

Chris is a writer who has spent years telling people to lose weight and get healthy in order to save money on their life insurance premiums. Twelve months ago he decided to actually take his own advice, and you’ve just read about his escapades since then.

knee update

so the knee

for the past month I’ve been going to physical therapy at least twice a week, and most weeks three times. I was a little on the fence about my physical therapist at first, but I like him well enough now.

however he convinced me that I did something to my meniscus. do any amount of Googling and you’ll find that for the most part meniscus injuries:

1. don’t heal on their own

2. require surgery

for the past month I’ve been prepping myself to need surgery – I mean, pick the worst case scenario and run with it, right? (no pun intended, i just re-read that while editing this post and kinda chuckled to myself about it) I feel like that’s better than assuming that everything will be rainbows and flowers when it is, in fact, not.

DSC_0410

look! a marathon picture! I am running and determined!

I think four times now I’ve been allowed to run a mile at PT.

these miles have been excruciating. seriously. not because I’m in pain because, for the most part, I’m not. but because I analyze every single second of every single step I’m taking. it’s exhausting. there is nothing like running and thinking “did that hurt? what was that twinge? wait, am I in pain? if I am in pain, am I in pain because of an injury or because I just haven’t been running and my body is freaking out right now?” (probably why this girl and i get along so well)

seriously. exhausting.

the initial pain that I stopped running because of is completely gone.

HOWEVER (because really, it wouldn’t be complete without a however, now would it?) I am getting a new kind of soreness now.

DSC_0419

it is not a soreness from running long distance though. which i was doing in this picture. remember when i was a distance runner? completely different kind of soreness.

thus, the meniscus. that is torn. and needs surgery. and will probably sideline me from endurance sports for the rest of my life.

p.s. I am not dramatic at. all.

all this lead up to say I went back to my orthopedic surgeon for a follow-up appointment today. I was completely prepared for him to tell me I need surgery.

instead what he told me was that I strained a ligament and that these things just take time to heal.

he said it could take up to six months.

he said no more attempting to run until its better.

he said stick to swimming, ellipticaling, and biking.

he said he gets it, I’m a workout fanatic and running junkie and he knows this has gotta be hard but I just have to be patient.

I very meekly asked about surgery.

he laughed and said no.

I walked out not sure if I was relieved or frustrated.

on the one hand, not tearing my meniscus is a very good thing. not needing surgery? even better. on the other hand, at least surgery would have been a quick fix. now I just have to practice my patience.

I am not a very patient person.

however I do think that this is God’s way of telling me he’s about to make me a patient person. and I can deal with that.

DSC_0349

so I wait. and I pray that this girl doesn’t give up on me and that we’re running long, hot, summer days together soon. because summer is looking like the soonest I’ll be running.

a big thanks to all of you for sticking with me and continuing to read. for being supportive when I’m having meltdowns. and for listening to me ramble.

links from around the web

I am sure that in about 15 minutes I’m going to seriously regret taking time out of my day to post, however I’m having an extremely frustrating work day and need to take a break. Since my Google Reader is currently empty and I’ve already checked Facebook and Twitter a million and a half times [nothing new to report there], I have turned to blogging.

I feel like I should preface this by saying that I like my job. As far back as I can remember I’ve wanted to be a writer, and that’s exactly what I’m doing right now. I also have always loathed interviewing people, and my job allows me to write without interviewing. So it’s pretty much a win.

However sitting at a computer all day does have its drawbacks and some days I want to pull my hair out. When those days [like today] happen, I turn to the internet and all its glory to offer some temporary relief from wanting to punch the computer screen and rip my hair out from writer’s block.

With that being said, here are some interesting web finds that me and my coworker have stumbled on today:

In engagement news…

So… Angelina Jolie’s ring

Please tell me I’m not the only one that is supremely unimpressed with that?

In royal wedding news…

I feel like Cely would appreciate this adaptation of the Will & Kate’s wedding

Actually I think Paula would too. Peeps galore!

In disgusting news…

Gerard Butler WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU!!

You can’t go doing things like that in a PortaPotty. That is just nasty.

In hilarious news…

I have looked at #47 multiple times today. If you don’t feel like scrolling through the entire article of people you probably want to know here is the picture:

funny

But seriously. If you need a good laugh then scroll through it. And if you try to tell me that you don’t need a good laugh then you are crazy. Everyone needs a good laugh all the time.

And lastly in funny YouTube videos news…

This.Is.Awesome. You can’t deny it.

Simply amazing.

Aaaand I already am regretting taking the time to post this. But I have laughed a few times in the process. Which is your favorite? Ever video bombed someone before?

2 years.

Two years ago I woke up, laced up my shoes, and went out on my last run as a single lady before running to my wedding venue.

Two years ago, I was a bundle of nerves as I put on a white dress that made me feel like a like the most beautiful girl in the world.

Sleep!

Oh look, another round of infographic Friday! I know you are all probably excited. Though I doubt you’re as excited right now  as when I posted my chart yesterday. I know, I know… I find this one especially fitting though since just yesterday I was talking about how I am going through another round of not getting enough sleep AND because I was awake for most of last night.

Anyway, infographic, you can take it away from here…

sleep

Source: http://frugaldad.com

Do you get enough sleep? I try, I really do. But I go through periods of time where I just can’t sleep that usually lasts for about a week at a time. That’s this week.

Well this is awkward

Oh hello there.

It’s always a little awkward coming back after an extended hiatus from blogging. I never know where to start or if I should bother catching you up on my positively thrilling life or not.

I’m not going to, by the way.

I bet you were all patiently wondering if this leg injury had in fact killed me?

Well I bring good news. It has not.

I am on a non-sleep cycle right now which makes me exceptionally hyper (delirious?) at a certain point, and lucky for you I’ve reached that point and I think my coworker may be tired of me IMing her (we use AIM at work. holla to my 15 year old self!), so I shall blog instead!

If you want to talk about my leg, well, I don’t. Sorry.

However! I do have a 30 minute ab circuit for you that I did this morning that was kind of fun, a little tough, and left me on an endorphin high. Want it? I’ll bet you do. Lucky for you I am feeling generous.

Circuit 1

Weighted ab machine crunches

Back extensions

Captain’s chair abs

Circuit 2

Crunches

Toe touchers

Planks

Circuit 3

Heel touchers

Medicine ball twists

Bicycle abs

Look I made a chart! And it’s blue! And it has my blog name at the bottom! I am so very official.

You do not even want to know how long it took me to make that. Too long is the answer.

I started with 10 minutes on the bike at resistance 5 and then moved on to the circuits. I did 3 sets of each circuit, did the moves back to back and rested 30 seconds between each set. Then I rested a minute in between each circuit. With the biking the whole thing took me 30 minutes and then I floated home from the gym.

I feel like a pretty legit blogger now that I’ve included a workout chart. You can expect to see me go big pretty soon here I’m sure.

Got any good circuit workouts? Do you even like circuit workouts? I am accepting any and all suggestions.
